ABOUT US
Brighter Maine Smiles provides dental hygiene care under Public Health Authority to Maine people who otherwise do not receive dental services. We offer preventative care in alternative settings to increase access, promote oral health, and prevent dental disease. We strive to make dental cleanings and related services affordable and accessible to help people improve their oral and systemic health.
Children’s oral health care should start early, with the first dental visit by the age of one. Healthy baby teeth play an important role in helping kids eat nutritious food, learn to speak properly, and to focus while in school. Early dental visits, fluoride treatments, and sealants can help Maine children have a healthy smile for a lifetime.
My name is Judi Jones, and I am dedicated to providing excellent dental hygiene care to underserved people in Maine. I enjoy working with children and adults, and bring 20 years of private practice and public health dental hygiene experience to my practice. Being able to take the time needed for each patient, I am able to make sure people feel safe and relaxed. I graduated from Brunswick High and received my dental hygiene degree from University of New England, magna cum laude. In my spare time I enjoy gardening, art, music and engaging with my local community.
Access to dental care is just as important for adults, but costs and other obstacles often make it difficult. A healthy smile leads to a healthy self-esteem at home and at work. Most dental disease is easily prevented by home care and visits with a dental hygienist. Although this does not take the place of a yearly exam with a dentist, lack of a dentist or dental insurance does not have to keep you from having a healthy mouth!
Senior citizens need good oral health just like everyone else! Life style changes often lead to an increased risk of dental disease for elders. Brighter Maine Smiles can help maintain a positive quality of life for Maine people as they age.

We provide dental hygiene care to Maine people who are not existing/regular patients with a dental care provider or have not seen a dentist in the last year. We offer preventative care in alternative settings, particularly public schools. Under Public Health Authority, we offer services that are affordable and accessible, helping people improve their oral and systemic health.
Services include:
-
Oral Screening: to triage any work needing to be done by a dentist or specialist. Review of medical history/consent. Referrals will be sent home if appropriate. Any significant findings will be listed on the summary statement.
-
Dental Prophylaxis: a dental cleaning to prevent and reduce dental disease by removing plaque and tartar. Oral hygiene education is always included.
-
Dental Sealants: a thin layer of white, BPA-free dental resin applied to the chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars. This can help keep cavity causing bacteria away.
-
Fluoride Varnish: a time-release fluoride applied to teeth to help prevent cavities.
-
Non-restorative treatment: medicament to help slow and/or stop dental cavities.
-
Periodontal Treatment: and maintenance by individual case.

Smoking cessation counseling.
Brighter Maine Smiles can coordinate care to ensure needed treatment is received. A signed consent form with a HIPPA (privacy act) statement and medical history is required for each patient. Everyone seen receives a summary of treatment and recommendations for home care and future dental care. These services are primarily provided in Mid-Coast Maine public schools, and Brunswick for adults. Please call or email for an appointment.
INSURANCE, FEES, & FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Most children seen are covered by MaineCare insurance. For children who do not have insurance, the fee for a cleaning, fluoride treatment and sealants is $65.00. Financial aid is available and no child is turned away due to inability to pay. Adults with MaineCare are covered for preventative services. For adults without dental insurance, there is a sliding scale fee ranging from $50 – $75.

ORAL HEALTH
It’s easier than you think!
Just a few minutes twice a day can help keep your mouth and your whole body healthy. There are many options for a daily routine, the trick is to find what works for you. Talk with the hygienist at Brighter Maine Smiles to find what fits your lifestyle.
Here are the basics:
Flossing removes the bacterial plaque from under the gum line, preventing gingivitis and gum disease. It also removes plaque in between the teeth that cause cavities. There are toothpicks (the most environmentally friendly), string floss, floss sticks, electric flossers, water pics, interdental brushes and many more gadgets that will disrupt the bacteria.
Flossing once a day and brushing for 2 minutes 2X a day helps remove bacterial plaque that forms on teeth. Some of those bacteria (germs) cause cavities, others cause gum disease. Bacterial plaque is the fuzzy stuff that builds up on your teeth throughout the day and you can feel it with your tongue. Angle the toothbrush toward the gums and brush gently in small circles. Consider an electric toothbrush, it does in 2 minutes what a manual takes 5 minutes to do!
Antiseptic mouthwash can help reduce gingivitis, and one with fluoride can help prevent cavities. Make sure to read the directions, and don’t let kids have mouthwash before they can spit it out into the sink.
Brighter Maine Smiles brings Maine people dental hygiene care that is affordable and easy to access. We accept MaineCare and have a sliding fee scale for adults ranging from $50 – $75. We can help with referrals for you and your family, whether it is for dental x-rays and an exam, a filling, oral surgeon or an orthodontist.

She has even come back between cleanings if I brought up a concern about one of my students. I would highly recommend her for your students. It has been a pleasure working with her!"

"Judi is the best! She is gentle, thorough, and most of all makes you feel so comfortable. She has cleaned my teeth a few times and I highly recommend her. She is willing to work with her patients when they don’t have insurance to make it so you can afford to have your teeth cleaned. You don’t find that anywhere today. She is the best of the best."
